Netflix has debuted a teaser trailer for its new miniseries "Alias Grace". Based on the award-winning novel by Margaret Atwood, it is inspired by the historical true story of convicted murderer Grace Marks.

Sarah Gadon plays Grace Marks, a poor, young Irish immigrant and domestic servant in Upper Canada who, along with stable hand James McDermott, was convicted of the brutal murders of their employer, Thomas Kinnear, and his housekeeper, Nancy Montgomery, in 1843. James was hanged while Grace was sentenced to life imprisonment.

Grace became one of the most enigmatic and notorious women of 1840s Canada for her supposed role in the sensational double murder, and was eventually exonerated after 30 years in jail. Her conviction was controversial, and sparked much debate about whether Grace was actually involved in the murder, or merely an unwitting accessory.

The teaser doesn't shed light on the storyline, but hints at the struggles that Grace was facing. "I think of all the things that have been written about me. That I am an inhuman female demon. That I am an innocent victim of a blaggard, forced against my will and in danger of my own life. That I am cunning and devious. How can I be all of these different things at once?" Sarah's Grace says in voiceover in the video. She adds, "I'd rather be a murderess than a murderer - if those are the only choices."

Anna Paquin plays Nancy Montgomery, Kerr Logan stars as James McDermott, Paul Gross portrays Thomas Kinnear, Zachary Levi is cast as Jeremiah the Peddler, and Edward Holcroft takes on the role of Dr. Simon Jordan, a fictional character who researches the case and falls in love with Grace.

The six-hour miniseries is written and produced by Sarah Polley. Mary Harron serves as director, with Polley, Harron and Noreen Halpern executive producing. It will be released November 3 on Netflix.
