Rob Letterman has been hired to serve behind the camera for the movie focusing on a new character in the Pokemon universe, Detective Pikachu.

AceShowbiz - "Pokemon" live-action movie has finally caught its director. Deadline has reported that "Goosebumps" and "Monsters vs. Aliens" helmer Rob Letterman has been hired by Legendary Entertainment to serve behind the camera for the movie focusing on a new character in the Pokemon universe, Detective Pikachu.
Letterman will direct the movie from a screenplay by Nicole Perlman ("Guardians of the Galaxy", "Thor") and Alex Hirsch ("Gravity Falls"). Details about the plot and supporting characters in the upcoming film are still scarce. The video game, which was released earlier this year, follows Tim Goodman, a young boy who meets Pikachu in Rhyme City when he's searching for his missing father.
"Pokemon" was created by Satoshi Tajiri in 1995. The first video game, launched for Game Boy, was released in Japan back in 1996. Nineteen animated films based on the property have been made with the first movie, "Pokemon: The First Movie: Mewtwo Strikes Back", released in 1998.
Letterman has a decent box office track record, as last year's "Goosebumps" earned more than $150 million worldwide and "Monsters vs. Aliens" raked in over $380 million back in 2009. His other directing credits included 2010's "Gulliver's Travels" and 2004's "Shark Tale" which grossed $237.4 million and $367.3 million on its budget of $75 million respectively.
