Jerome Valeska is back to "Gotham" for its upcoming season 3. Cameron Monaghan has hinted at his return as the Joker-esque villain via Instagram and Twitter. The "Shameless" actor posted on Thursday, September 15 an audio clip featuring his character's signature laugh.

EW has confirmed Monaghan's return for the third season, but it's unclear how the show will bring him back. The villain died in early season 2 after being stabbed in the neck by Theo Galavan (James Frain).

Executive producer Danny Cannon explained at the time the significance of introducing the character, "I think the Joker isn't so much a single person as he is an ideology. [He's] an idea that we can all live without fear and we can all be free and we can all not live within the world's restrictions and not live within the rules at all. This guy walks between the lines and I think that's an ideology. It's not a single person. It's a way to live your life, and I think that's what we explore."

Showrunner John Stephen also said at the TCA summer press tour that during season 3, "the cult of the Joker, which we started at the beginning of [season 2]," upon Jerome's seeming death, "is going to extend and deepen and change a little bit this year, where you have these sort of underground movements that have started to talk about Jerome and what he represented."

"Gotham" season 3 premieres Monday, September 19 at 8/7c on FOX. Jada Pinkett Smith will return as Fish Mooney, Benedict Samuel is cast as Mad Hatter a.k.a. Jervis Tech, and Maggie Geha plays an older version of Poison Ivy. The new season will also feature the proto Killer Croc and Harley Quinn.
