Despite the shocking death, it seems like the character signed off for good.

AceShowbiz - "Gotham" season 4 aired its finale, and many fans were shocked when one of the Batman prequel's original characters was unexpectedly killed off. Despite the shocking death, it seems like the character signed off for good as some other characters were leaving the town and multiple villains were rising from the dark.

[SPOILER ALERT!] The Thursday, May 17 episode of the FOX series saw Solomon Grundy (Drew Powell) getting shot. However, he managed to heal and return to his normal Butch Gilzean state. It appeared that it only delayed his death as he was later murdered by Oswald Cobblepot a.k.a. Penguin (Robin Lord Taylor).

Before pulling a gun and shot Butch in the chest, Penguin tearfully told the latter that he saw him as a friend and he was "trully sorry."

"This is the fourth time I've been shot on the show," Powell says to Variety. "Clearly I can survive a bullet wound. But what made this one different was the fact that he got shot in the heart. [That] would probably take another dip in the Slaughter Swamp to recover from."

The actor adds that he "kind of found out by accident" that his character will not make it to the season finale. As for his feelings after he learned that, he admits that he has "a mix of a lot of emotions. Obviously I'm so close to this group." He adds, "I just felt so grateful that I've had four great years of this. Look, who knows what's to come, but I can feel like I've done good work and had a great experience."

Butch's death was not the only death in the finale. Ra's al Ghul, who was killed by Bruce Wayne early in the season, was resurrected with Bruce's own blood. However, the villain was once again killed in battle as Barbara Keene stabbed him through the chest with the Kurdish dagger.

"Gotham", also starring Benjamin McKenzie as James Gordon, Donal Logue as Harvey Bullock and David Mazouz as Bruce Wayne, was renewed for a fifth and final season. The new season is set to premiere during midseason on the network.
