The song was released during the BBC Radio 1 Breakfast Show, where GaGa's co-hosting with Nick Grimshaw, on Friday, September 9 before hitting YouTube and iTunes. Hashtag #PerfectIllusionMidnight has since become a worldwide trending topic on Twitter.

"It wasn't love, it wasn't love/ It was a perfect illusion (Perfect illusion)/ Mistaken for love, it wasn't love/ It was a perfect illusion (Perfect illusion)/ You were a perfect illusion," GaGa sings, "Where are you?/ Cause I can't see you/ It was a perfect illusion/ But I feel you watchin' me/ Dilated, falling free/ In a modern ecstasy."

Earlier in the day, GaGa teased a music video for "Perfect Illusion", showing her dancing in a black jacket and silver sequined hotpants.

Produced by Mark Ronson, Tame Impala's Kevin Parker and BloodPop, "Perfect Illusion" is released ahead of GaGa's forthcoming fifth studio album. BloodPop calls GaGa's new album "soul-rooted, [but] pop at heart." He describes "Perfect Illusion" as "a big rock song that makes you want to dance."

He tells Rolling Stone, "[GaGa, Mark, Kevin and I] started at noon and wrote into the night. Every few days, a lyric would change and it would get better and better."
