A list of movie nominees for the 2016 Writers Guild of America Awards screenplay nominations was unveiled on Wednesday, January 6. "Straight Outta Compton" and "Trainwreck" are among the nominees in Original Screenplay category.

In addition to the two aforementioned movies, "Bridge of Spies", "Sicario" and "Spotlight" are vying for the same title. As SlashFilm noted, WGAs made the similar move to what the Producers Guild of America Awards and the Screen Actors Guild Awards did by putting "Stright Outta Compton", "Sicario" and "Spotlight" into the nomination. However, the WGAs is the only one of the three top guild awards which puts Amy Schumer's "Trainwreck" in a race.

"The Martian", which recently won Favorite Dramatic Movie at the 2016 People's Choice Awards, is pitted against "Carol, "Steve Jobs", "The Big Short" and "Trumbo" for Adapted Screenplay Award.

In the category of Documentary Screenplay, "Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck" and "Prophet's Prey" compete against "Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief" and "Being Canadian".

Besides honoring screenplay, the Writers Guild of America Awards honors outstanding writing in TV, new media, videogames, news, radio, promotional and graphic animation categories. The awards will be presented at both the Los Angeles ceremony at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza and the New York ceremony at the Edison Ballroom. The Los Angeles and New York ceremonies will be held concurrently on February 13.
