AceShowbiz - Thanks to his role in Paolo Sorrentino's "Youth", Michael Caine won the Best Actor nod at the 2015 European Film Awards. The 82-year-old actor also received a lifetime recognition called the European Academy's Honorary Award, which has only ever been given twice before at the EFAs.
"It's been 50 years and I've never won an award in Europe. And now I've won two in one evening," the British actor said in his second acceptance speech. "It's so strange because I (usually) sit in these audiences and just clap someone else. I can't tell you what this means to me." The Academy previously gave the honor to founding members Manoel de Oliveira and Michel Piccoli.
"Youth" was in fact the biggest winner of the night after taking the most nominations. It won the Best Picture as well as Best Director for Sorrentino. This is the second time Sorrentino has triumphed at the EFAs, having won for his flick "The Great Beauty" in 2013.
Winning the Best Actress race was Charlotte Rampling for her role in "45 Years". She also took home a lifetime achievement award from the European Film Academy. Meanwhile, Christoph Waltz was bestowed the Achievement in World Cinema honor. "Thank you, I'm honored beyond comprehension," he said upon receiving the prize from Alexander Skarsgard.
The awards show was held on Saturday, December 12 at Berlin's Haus der Berliner Festspiele and attended by 900 guests. There was an aftershow party at the nearby Sofitel Berlin Kurfurstendamm.
