The Weeknd and Bruno Mars were the biggest winners of the 2015 Soul Train Awards, which aired on BET and Centric on Sunday night, November 29. The Canadian R&B superstar and the Hawaii-born singer, who led the nominees with five nods, took home two awards each.
The Weeknd won the Best R&B/Soul Male Artist title over competitors like Chris Brown, D'Angelo, Trey Songz and Tyrese Gibson. He also claimed the Album of the Year trophy for his chart-topping effort "Beauty Behind the Madness".
As for Mars, he shared his two wins with his "Uptown Funk" collaborator Mark Ronson. Their No. 1 hit was named Song of the Year while its visuals earned the two artists the Song of the Year Award. They beat out The Weeknd ("Earned It") and Jidenna ("Classic Man") in both categories.
The 2015 Soul Train Awards was taped on November 6 at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas. Other acts making up the winners list included Jidenna (Best New Artist), Kendrick Lamar (Best Hip-Hop Song of the Year for "Alright") and Omarion (Best Collaboration for "Post to Be" with Breezy and Jhene Aiko).
In addition to giving away prizes, the annual awards show featured performances from some big names in R&B and soul. Erykah Badu, who also served as a host, kicked off the evening with a medley of her hits, including "Danger", "On & On" and "Love of My Life". She additionally sang her new track "Phone Down" after calling out Tyrese Gibson whom she spotted talking on his phone in the crowd while she was talking on the stage.
Gibson himself was also one of the performers. The singer, who was honored with the Centric Certified Award at the show, delivered a passionate rendition of his hit "Shame" alongside a band and some backing vocalists.
