After months of chatter and speculation, Sam Smith has finally confirmed that he would be singing the theme song for the upcoming James Bond film "Spectre". The British singer took to Instagram to publicly announce that he both penned and performed the song, titled "Writing's on the Wall." The confirmation came shortly after he ignited James Bond soundtrack rumors by posting on his Instagram a picture of his hand with a ring bearing the octopus symbol of Spectre, a crime organization in the 007 universe.
The 23-year-old Grammy-winning singer posted on his account on Tuesday, September 8, a photo of himself. In companion to the pic, Smith wrote, "This is one of the highlights of my career. I am honoured to finally announce that I will be singing the next Bond theme song. I am so excited to be a part of this iconic British legacy and join an incredible line up of some of my biggest musical inspirations. I hope you all enjoy the song as much as I enjoyed making it."
"Writing's on the Wall" was co-written by Smith's long-time collaborator Jimmy Napes. The song will be available for purchase on September 25 and is available for pre-order at store.digitalstores.co.uk.
Smith becomes the first British male solo singer to record the Bond theme since 1965 when Tom Jones recorded "Thunderball." He, moreover, is following in the footsteps of Paul McCartney, Madonna, Tina Turner, and Adele among others who have all sung James Bond films theme songs.
