To the magazine, director Bryan Singer says "Apocalypse" is "kind of the introduction to" these young mutants. "At the same time, it has concluding aspects of those previous stories," he adds.

The story is set 10 years after "X-Men: Days of Future Past". When Apocalypse awakens from his Egyptian tomb, he sees "a chaotic world of conflict and war and destruction." Singer goes on sharing, "It's one giant civilization that now requires one giant culling. That's why he needs special assistants in this process."

Apocalypse then recruits Storm from the streets in Cairo, Angel from a fight club in Berlin, Psylocke who works for the mutant-broker Caliban, and Magneto who tries to live a "normal" life in Poland. "He's fallen in love and he's basically left his metal ways behind," Fassbender says of his character, but it won't be long since "Apocalypse finds Erik at a low ebb and recruits him."

Elsewhere, Raven (Jennifer Lawrence) is helping rescue mutants who are oppressed or enslaved, including the teleport Nightcrawler. When "she hears about what happened to Erik and she wants to seek him out and help him," Lawrence says. Meanwhile, Charles (James McAvoy) is "teaching people how to control their abilities so that they can work at a bank. But of course this movie challenges all of that," so McAvoy says.

Isaac also describes his character Apocalypse, "He's believed to be the first mutant, whatever that means. He is the creative-slash-destructive force of this earth. When things start to go awry, or when things seem like they're not moving towards evolution, he destroys those civilizations." Apocalypse is a giant 5,000 year-old Egyptian mutant.

Writer-producer Simon Kinberg explains the challenge to top previous installment, the epic "Days of Future Past". "The problem with 'Days of Future Past' is it's hard to sequelize," he admits. "Whenever we talked about the sequel, the challenge was that it needed to feel not necessarily bigger visually, but that the stakes needed to feel bigger."

"X-Men: Apocalypse" is slated to open in U.S. theaters on May 27, 2016.
