Box Office: 'Ted 2' Disappoints With $32.9 Million, 'Jurassic World' Remains at No.1

The R-rated comedy debuted to an underwhelming $32.9 million from 3,442 domestic theaters, while the raptor movie enjoyed its third week at number one with $54.2 million.

Seth MacFarlane's R-rated comedy "Ted 2" debuted to a disappointing $33.5 million across 3,442 domestic theaters, placing third on North American box office. The sequel could not match the success of its predecessor which launched to an impressive $54.4 million in summer 2012. Overseas, the comedy from Media Rights Capital and Universal opened to $20.3 million from 26 markets for a global launch of $53.2 million.

Universal domestic distribution chief Nicholas Carpou said of the movie, "You have to remember that no one expected 'Ted' to do what it did." He added, "So for 'Ted 2' to do $33 million in a very crowded weekend isn't bad. And we have a very good chance of playing out. 'Ted 2' will be a successful film for us."

"Jurassic World" rocked this weekend's box office with $54.5 million, enjoying its third week on the first place. The raptor film becomes the fifth film to earn $500 million domestically, right behind "The Dark Knight" which grossed $534.8 million. Other movies which successfully grossed more than $500 million domestically were "The Avengers" ($623.4 million), "Titanic" ($658.7 million) and "Avatar" ($760.5 million).

Although Pixar's "Inside Out (2015)" couldn't beat the tentpole dinosaur movie, the animation did well taking runner-up position on the chart in its second weekend. The movie grossed $52.3 million from 4,132 domestic theaters with a global total of $184.9 million.

Another new release this weekend was "Max (2015)" which launched to $12.2 million from 2,855 theaters and nabbed the fourth place. The movie is about a military dog who develops a relationship with his dead handler's brother. According to Jeff Goldstein, Warner Bros. distribution executive vice president, "Max" did well in the South and the Midwest areas with a high percentage of military families.

Rounding out the top five was Fox's "Spy", a Melissa McCarthy starrer, which earned $7.9 million, bringing its total to $88.3 million after four weeks in theaters.
