Emily Blunt Criticizes Cannes Over High Heels Rule for Women

The 32-year-old actress takes a stand on the Cannes Film Festival's reported sexist practices, saying, 'Everyone should wear flats to be honest.'

AceShowbiz - Emily Blunt shared her opinion about the Cannes Film Festival's reported sexist practices during a press conference of her new movie "Sicario" on Tuesday, May 19. When asked by a reporter that women were required to wear heels to a Cannes gala, Emily said, "Everyone should wear flats to be honest."

"We shouldn't be wearing high heels anyways. That's my point of view. I just prefer wearing Converse sneakers," the "Into the Woods" actress added. "Yeah, that's very disappointing. To think there are these waves of equality and waves of people discovering that women are so fascinating and interesting to watch and bankable [on screen].

"[But] it was interesting, with this film, I think you got asked early on if you'd rewrite my part for a guy," Emily said, before turning to "Sicario" director Denis Villeneuve who responded, "As a sign of protest, Benicio, Josh and I will walk the stairs in high heels tonight."

Earlier in the day, Screen Daily posted a report with headline "Cannes: Women denied Palais entry for wearing flats". According to the site, "a handful of women in their fifties were turned away from the screening of Todd Haynes' competition entry Carol on Sunday night after being told the height of their smart footwear didn't pass muster. Multiple guests, some older with medical conditions, were denied access to the anticipated world-premiere screening for wearing rhinestone flats."

However, the report was debunked by Cannes festival director Thierry Fremaux on Twitter. When a fan asked if the report was true, Thierry replied, in French, "Not at all. And the rumor that the Festival requires high heels for women on the steps is unfounded." Another fan asked, "Wonder why those women were refused access tho, feels like a club policy implemented by over zealous security," to which Thierry responded, "For stairs, the regulation has not changed: 'Smoking, formal wear.' No mention on the 'heels'."
