The 'How to Get Away with Murder' star will play the antislavery activist in the TV movie.

AceShowbiz - While she's not busy defending clients in court, Viola Davis is going to fight for the freedom of slaves. The actress, who portrays master litigator Annalise DeWitt on ABC's "How to Get Away with Murder", is attached to star as Civil Rights activist Harriet Tubman in HBO's upcoming movie.

The biopic, which is yet to be titled, is based on Kate Clifford Larson's 2003 book "Bound for the Promised Land: Harriet Tubman: Portrait of an American Hero". It highlights Tubman as she escaped from slavery and helped free hundreds of slaves using safe houses known as the Underground Railroad.

The project is said to be in the early development stage and has not been given the go-ahead for production. Davis will executive produce it along with her husband Julius Tennon, Justin Falvey, Darryl Frank, Jim Lefkowitz, Doug Ellin and Cliff Dorfman. Kirk Ellis, who penned HBO's miniseries "John Adams", will write the script.
