The former Fox executive who helped launch 'Titanic' and 'Avatar' is picked among candidates like Michael De Luca and Doug Belgrad.

AceShowbiz - Sony has found a new head for their movie studio, TriStar. Tom Rothman who previously ran Fox Filmed Entertainment Group is tapped to replace Amy Pascal who stepped down after the scandal caused by cyber attack amidst North Korea's protest over the studio's Kim Jong-Un assassination comedy "The Interview".
Numerous leaked emails exposed Pascal's derogatory comments about Hollywood stars such as Leonardo DiCaprio and Angelina Jolie. In an email exchange, she and producer Scott Rudin were revealed making racist jokes about President Obama. Both have since apologized for their insensitive remarks.
Pascal is staying with Sony to start a new production venture and aid Rothman in his transition. "Grateful and humbled" by the recruitment, he said, "I have had the pleasure of working closely with the exceptionally talented teams at SPE for the past year, and I am excited to build on those relationships in this new role."
While working for Fox, Rothman helped launch two highest grossing films in cinematic history, "Titanic" and "Avatar". He joined Sony in 2013. His impressive track record and his rapport with A-listers like Jodie Foster and George Clooney set him apart from rival candidates Michael De Luca and Doug Belgrad.
"Tom's creativity, strong talent relationships and track record of enduring films and commercial success are unparalleled in this industry and exactly what we are looking for to grow our film business," said Sony Pictures Entertainment Chairman and CEO Michael Lynton. It's also announced that Lynton's contract with Sony has been extended.
Sony is currently working with Marvel to reboot their blockbuster franchise "Spider-Man".
