Green Day will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in their first year of eligibility. The band led by Billie Joe Armstrong will be honored at a ceremony at Cleveland's Public Hall on April 18, 2015.
Green Day was formed in 1987 in Northern California. The rockers released "1000 Hours" EP in spring of 1989 and reached mainstream success with 1994's "Dookie" and 1995's "Insomniac". "American Idiot" (2004) established them as one of the biggest bands in the world.
At the April event, they will be inducted along with other acts including Joan Jett & The Blackhearts, Lou Reed, Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble, Bill Withers and Paul Butterfield Blues Band. Additionally, Ringo Starr will be honored with the Award for Musical Excellence and North Carolina vocal group The "5" Royales will receive the Early Influence Award.
"These inductees epitomize rock 'n' roll's impact over the past 50 years and continuing through today," Joel Peresman, the president of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation, said in a statement on Tuesday, December 16.
The inductees were chosen by more than 700 artists, music industry professionals and historians. To be eligible for nomination, musicians must have released their first single or album at least 25 years ago. This year's nominees who failed to make the cut included Chic, Nine Inch Nails and Sting.
