Three out of the five candidates in the Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Film category are DGAs' first timers.

Directors Guild of America announces five nominees competing for the DGA Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Film for 2013. The candidates are Alfonso Cuaron, Paul Greengrass, Steve McQueen, David O. Russell and Martin Scorsese.
It marks the first time Cuaron, 52, Greengrass, 58, and McQueen, 44, get nominated at the DGAs. The three are nominated for space sci-fi drama "Gravity", piracy action thriller "Captain Phillips", and slavery period drama "12 Years a Slave" respectively.
Meanwhile, it's a second DGA nomination for Russell, 55. The "Silver Linings Playbook" helmer received his first nod back in 2010 for "The Fighter". Now, he is vying for the award again for his brilliant adaptation of FBI true-story Abscam operation "American Hustle".
For Scorsese, it's his 11th nod at the DGAs. He was previously nominated for best director in feature film for "Taxi Driver" (1976), "Raging Bull" (1980), "Goodfellas" (1990), "The Age of Innocence" (1993), "Gangs of New York" (2002), "The Aviator" (2004), "The Departed" (2006), and "Hugo" (2011). He is now competing for the prize for his black comedic take on the story of real-life stock market manipulator Jordan Belfort, "The Wolf of Wall Street".
The 71-year-old helmer once won in the category for "The Departed" which is a remake of Hong Kong crime thriller "Internal Affairs". He also won the DGA Award in 2010 for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Dramatic Television for "Boardwalk Empire" and was nominated for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Documentary for "George Harrison: Living in the Material World" in 2011.
On top of that, the movie veteran was presented with the Filmmaker Award at the inaugural DGA Honors Gala in 1999, and he was honored with the DGA Lifetime Achievement Award in 2003.
The 2013 winner in the Feature Film category will be announced at the 66th Annual DGA Awards dinner and ceremony on Saturday evening, January 25 at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza. The event will be hosted by "Glee" star Jane Lynch.
Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers will receive the guild's diversity award. Lee Blaine will be given the Frank Capra Achievement Award, and Vince DeDario will be feted with Franklin J. Schaffner Achievement Award.
Nominees in TV and commercials category will be announced January 9, and contenders in documentary category will be unveiled January 13.
