Robin Roberts is taking a medical leave from "Good Morning America". Her co-host Josh Elliott helped her to announce the news, saying "You're the team captain and the team is going to run in your absence but you're never really going to be gone."
Roberts, who successfully battled breasts cancer five years ago, will have a bone marrow transplant next week. She has myelodysplastic syndrome, a disease of the blood and bone marrow. It so happens that her sister Sally-Ann is "an excellent match" for the transplant. Both Sally-Ann and Roberts' doctor came to "GMA" on Thursday, August 30 morning.
Roberts promised her audience that she would be back as soon as she could. "The greatest tragedy is to have the experience and miss the meaning," she said. "I am determined not to miss that meaning because through it I have discovered that I have been given many gifts - gifts that will carry me through this difficult time. "
The Thursday show would be her last until she is ready to return.
