The 43rd Annual NAACP Image Awards has handed out its kudos on Friday, February 17 at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. Taking the coveted prizes in TV field were "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" and "Tyler Perry's House of Payne" which were named Outstanding Drama and Comedy Series respectively.
Also having a victorious night was Nick Cannon who scored Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series through his stint on "Up All Night". LL Cool J won an accolade for best drama actor through his role on "NCIS: Los Angeles", while Laurence Fishburne was chosen as Outstanding Actor in a Television Movie, Mini-Series or Dramatic Special.
Fishburne's TV movie which aired on HBO, "Thurgood", also nabbed the Outstanding Television Movie, Mini-Series or Dramatic Special award. In Reality Series category, "Dancing with the Stars" managed to edge out other competitors including "American Idol" and "All-American Muslim".
"Grey's Anatomy" and "The Game", which led the nomination list with six mentions each, only took home one trophy each. The former helped James Pickens Jr. to grab Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series prize, while the latter has its win for Outstanding Writing in a Comedy Series.
In addition to honoring outstanding people of color for their work in TV, the 2012 NAACP Image Awards handed out kudos in film, music and literature categories. Filmmaker George Lucas was honored with the Vanguard Award, which was presented by Samuel L. Jackson.
The award-giving event also paid a tribute to the late Whitney Houston by playing a footage of her accepting the award for outstanding female artist in 1994. Yolanda Adams, meanwhile, performed "I Love the Lord, He Heard My Cry" dedicated to the "Saving All My Love for You" hitmaker.
