With fans taking charge to select the nominees of 2009 MTV Movie Awards, "Twilight" came up topping the nomination field as MTV unveiled its contending films on Monday, May 4. The Catherine Hardwicke-directed vampire drama scored seven nods from the eleven categories available, nabbing Best Movie gong as well as placing two of its actors, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner in Breakthrough Performance Male.
Those two categories aside, "Twilight" also garnered a Best Female Performance nomination for leading actress Kristen Stewart. It also earned the chances to win the golden popcorn for Best Fight (Robert Pattinson vs. Cam Gigandet); for Best Kiss (Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson); and for a new category, Best Song From a Movie (Paramore's "Decode").
Hot on "Twilight" tail in collecting multiple nods was Academy Award-winning "Slumdog Millionaire". The rag-to-riches drama hauled in six nominations, including Best Movie, Breakthrough Performance Female for Freida Pinto and Breakthrough Performance Male for Dev Patel. It will also have to be up against "Twilight" for Best Song with A.R. Rahman's track "Jai Ho" being enlisted on the category.
In addition to Best Song From a Movie, MTV will also introduce another brand new category, Best WTF Moment which honors an outrageous scene in a movie. The nominees included Amy Poehler for Peeing in the Sink in "Baby Mama", Angelina Jolie for Curved Bullet Kill in "Wanted (2008)" and Ayush Mahesh Khedekar for Jumping in the Poop Shed in "Slumdog Millionaire".
The 2009 MTV Movie Awards will be aired live on MTV on Sunday, May 31. "Saturday Night Live" star Andy Samberg will serve as the host. In the meantime, fans can vote for the winners starting Monday, May 4, in MTV Movie Awards site. The voting line for Best Movie will stay open during the live awards show.
