In the audacious horror-comedy Teeth, director Mitchell Lichtenstein delivers a darkly satirical and unapologetically twisted take on the classic coming-of-age story. The film centers on Dawn O'Keefe, a devoutly religious high school student played by Jess Weixler, who is a proud member of her school's abstinence pledge group. Dawn believes she is saving herself for a pure, godly marriage, but she harbors a deeply unsettling secret: she is afflicted with a rare and terrifying condition known as vagina dentata, a literal set of teeth within her vagina. When a predatory classmate attempts to assault her, Dawn's body unleashes a violent, primal defense mechanism that is as shocking as it is final. As word of her lethal anatomy spreads, a series of increasingly aggressive and entitled young men, including her troubled stepbrother Brad (John Hensley), learn the hard way that crossing Dawn comes with a fatal bite. Blending pitch-black humor with body horror, the film subverts traditional horror tropes to explore themes of sexual repression, female empowerment, and the monstrous consequences of male entitlement. What begins as a bizarre biological curse slowly transforms into a source of terrifying agency, forcing Dawn to confront the monstrous power she never asked for.
