In the seemingly ordinary city of San Francisco, a strange and terrifying transformation begins. Health inspector Matthew Bennell, played by Donald Sutherland, and his colleague Elizabeth Driscoll, portrayed by Brooke Adams, start to hear unsettling reports from friends and citizens: their loved ones look the same, but something essential is missing. As more people succumb to a chilling emotional blankness, Matthew and Elizabeth turn to their friend, the charismatic psychiatrist Dr. David Kibner (Leonard Nimoy), for answers, only to find the conspiracy runs deeper than they could have imagined.
