I Listen for the Sound of Ashes
In the hauntingly brief yet deeply affecting drama "I Listen for the Sound of Ashes," director and writer Mihir Pyakury...
In the stark and unforgiving landscape of Los Angeles’s streets, a lonely and impoverished man named Willie finds a fleeting sense of purpose in a brutal underground world. Portrayed with raw vulnerability by Thomas Haden Church, Willie is a homeless man who is paid by wealthy thrill-seekers to fight other homeless men in makeshift, bare-knuckle brawls inside a cardboard ring. His fragile existence is further complicated when he forms an unexpected bond with a discarded, talking doll he names “Baby,” which becomes his sole confidant. This poignant drama, written and directed by Knate Gwaltney, explores the depths of human isolation and the desperate search for connection. As Willie navigates this harsh reality, his path intersects with a menacing enforcer played by Boyd Holbrook and a fellow fighter portrayed by Terrence Howard, forcing him to confront the violence of his circumstances and the fragile hope he has managed to preserve. The film paints a gritty, emotionally charged portrait of a man fighting for more than just survival, but for a reason to believe his life still has meaning.
