In the fog-shrouded streets of 19th century Edinburgh, a sinister trade in corpses fuels the ambitions of a brilliant but morally compromised doctor, played by Henry Daniell. His unscrupulous supplier is the chilling cabman John Gray, brought to life with menacing charm by horror legend Boris Karloff, who ensures a fresh supply of "subjects" for the doctor's anatomy lectures, no matter the grave cost. When legitimate sources dry up, Gray's methods grow increasingly macabre, drawing the suspicion of the doctor's idealistic young assistant and attracting the attention of a rival, the scheming porter Joseph played by Bela Lugosi. Directed by Robert Wise and produced from a story by Val Lewton, this classic horror tale weaves a web of guilt, obsession, and mounting dread as the line between medical progress and monstrous crime blurs. The atmospheric tension builds as each character becomes entangled in a dark conspiracy where the dead do not rest in peace, and the living are never truly safe from the ghastly secrets lurking in the shadows.
