Formed in Hollywood, California in July 1984, the band's classic lineup coalesced around the charismatic frontman Jani Lane, guitarists Erik Turner and Joey Allen, bassist Jerry Dixon, and drummer Steven Sweet. They built a dedicated following on the Sunset Strip, honing a catchy, radio-friendly sound that blended hard rock riffs with polished pop melodies, which perfectly captured the spirit of the time.
The band's major breakthrough came with their 1989 debut album, "Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich." Fueled by the massive power ballad "Heaven," which reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, and the raucous singles "Down Boys" and "Sometimes She Cries," the album achieved multi-platinum status. Warrant solidified their headlining status with the 1990 follow-up, "Cherry Pie," whose title track, accompanied by a famously provocative music video, became an enduring anthem of the genre. The early 1990s represented the peak of Warrant's fame, as they toured extensively and became fixtures on MTV. However, the shifting musical landscape of the mid-90s, marked by the rise of grunge, presented significant challenges. The band's 1992 album, "Dog Eat Dog," showcased a heavier, more socially conscious direction but failed to match prior sales. Internal tensions, particularly surrounding the creative direction and the pressures of fame, led to Jani Lane's initial departure in 1993. Tragedy struck the Warrant family with the death of Jani Lane in 2011. The band persevered, with Robert Mason returning as lead vocalist in 2014.
