The Pink Spiders
Emerging from the Nashville rock scene in the early 2000s, The Pink Spiders carved out a niche with their sharp, hook-laden brand of alternative rock, achieving national recognition with their major-label debut produced by a new wave icon. Formed in 2003 by vocalist/guitarist Matt Friction and drummer Bob Ferrari, the band’s original lineup was rounded out by bassist Jon Decious. They quickly made their mark locally, releasing the EP The Pink Spiders Are Taking Over! in 2004, followed by their independent full-length debut, Hot Pink, in 2005. Their energetic live show, exemplified by a standout performance at The Viper Room in West Hollywood in March 2005, caught the attention of Geffen Records, who signed the band shortly thereafter.
The band’s breakthrough arrived in 2006 with Teenage Graffiti, a defining album produced by The Cars frontman Ric Ocasek. The record’s slick, power-pop sound and infectious single “Little Razorblade” propelled it onto the Billboard 200 chart. This success was amplified by appearances on the Vans Warped Tour and several national television spots, cementing The Pink Spiders as one of the era’s notable modern rock acts. However, the recording of their follow-up album, Sweat It Out, was fraught with creative disagreements with their label. These tensions led to the departures of both Decious and Ferrari shortly after the album’s eventual release in September 2008 through Adrenaline Music and Friction’s own Mean Buzz Records. Following a promotional tour, the band entered a hiatus in 2009 as members pursued other projects.
The core trio of Friction, Decious, and Ferrari reunited for a performance at The Viper Room in June 2010, with Friction officially announcing the band’s return. They embarked on the “2 Legit 2 Quit Tour” in 2011 and released new music, signaling a steady reactivation. A major milestone came in August 2016 when the band performed a sold-out tenth-anniversary show for Teenage Graffiti at Nashville’s Mercy Lounge. This resurgence culminated in the release of their fourth studio album, Mutations, on July 31, 2018, which was supported by several US headlining tours. The Pink Spiders’ current lineup features Matt Friction alongside JoCo on bass, Joey B-Side on drums, and Young James on guitar, maintaining their commitment to crafting vibrant, guitar-driven rock music for their dedicated fanbase.
