The Neighbourhood Biography

news-detailsEmerging from the suburban landscape of Newbury Park, California, The Neighbourhood established themselves as a definitive voice in 2010s alternative rock with their moody, monochromatic aesthetic and genre-blending sound. Formed in 2011, the band, composed of vocalist Jesse Rutherford, guitarists Jeremy Freedman and Zach Abels, bassist Mikey Margott, and drummer Brandon Fried, quickly garnered attention through a series of self-released EPs that showcased their signature blend of indie rock, hip-hop, and R&B influences. Their atmospheric and emotionally charged music, paired with a strictly black-and-white visual identity, carved out a distinct niche for the group in the modern rock scene.

The band's major label debut, I Love You., released in 2013 on Columbia Records, propelled them to mainstream recognition. While the album itself was a success, it was the third single, "Sweater Weather," that became a cultural phenomenon. The track peaked at number 14 on the Billboard Hot 100 and experienced a massive resurgence in popularity nearly a decade later, becoming a streaming juggernaut on platforms like Spotify and a staple on alternative radio. Other standout tracks from the album, including "Afraid" and "Daddy Issues," further cemented their status and expanded their dedicated fanbase. That same year, they released the EP The Love Collection, followed in 2014 by the hip-hop-influenced mixtape #000000 & #FFFFFF, which featured collaborations with artists like YG and Danny Brown.

Their sophomore album, Wiped Out!, arrived in 2015, delving into darker, more textured sonic territories. The band then embarked on a period of prolific output, releasing a series of EPs—Hard, To Imagine, and Ever Changing—which were later compiled into the 2018 LP Hard to Imagine the Neighbourhood Ever Changing. Their official self-titled third studio album was also released in 2018. During this time, lead singer Jesse Rutherford began exploring a solo career, eventually signing a solo deal with Atlantic Records in 2023. The band entered a period of uncertainty in February 2022 when it was reported they were taking a hiatus following the removal of drummer Brandon Fried, who faced allegations of sexual misconduct involving María Zardoya of the band The Marías. However, in a move signaling their return, the band posted to social media in August 2025 indicating they were creating music again, with Fried rejoining the lineup. The Neighbourhood's journey, marked by a massive breakout hit, stylistic evolution, and internal challenges, underscores their enduring influence on a generation of alternative music fans.
