The Format emerged as a distinctive voice in the 2000s indie rock scene, a duo known for their clever songcraft and a sound that defiantly blended genres. Formed in 2002 in Peoria, Arizona, by vocalist Nate Ruess and multi-instrumentalist Sam Means, the band chose its name as a tongue-in-cheek critique of the music industry's formulaic approach to creating hit singles. Their music was a vibrant tapestry woven from threads of indie, alternative, folk, and punk, all underpinned by a deep affection for the melodic hooks of 1960s and 1970s pop. This unique blend quickly garnered a dedicated fanbase.

The band's debut album, "Interventions and Lullabies," released in 2003, served as their breakthrough. Fueled by the enduring fan favorite "The First Single," the record established their signature style: introspective, often witty lyrics delivered with Nate Ruess's impassioned vocals over intricate, piano-driven arrangements. They followed this with the ambitious "Dog Problems" in 2006, an album that further expanded their sonic palette with lush orchestration and even sharper songwriting, solidifying their status as critical darlings and cult heroes. Despite their growing influence, internal pressures led the band to announce an indefinite hiatus in February 2008.

Following the split, Nate Ruess achieved massive commercial success as the frontman of the pop-rock band fun. and later as a solo artist, while Sam Means pursued production and solo work. For over a decade, The Format's legacy lived on through their two beloved albums. In a surprise to fans, the duo announced a return from hiatus in February 2020 for a series of special shows, though these were ultimately cancelled due to the global pandemic. The reunion was not abandoned, however, and in 2025, Nate Ruess and Sam Means officially reunited The Format for a second time, announcing their long-awaited third studio album.

Titled "Boycott Heaven," the album was released on January 23, 2026, marking a triumphant return nearly two decades after their last release. The new music reaffirmed their foundational sound while showcasing the artistic maturity both members had developed in the intervening years. The Format's journey, from their early critique of industry formulas to their cherished catalog and unexpected rebirth, underscores their enduring appeal and the lasting power of their collaborative spirit.
