Emerging from the vibrant Bay Area music scene, The Cataracs carved out a unique space as a hip-hop and indie-pop production duo known for crafting infectious, genre-blending hits. Formed in Berkeley, California in 2003, the group consisted of high school friends David "Campa" Benjamin Singer-Vine and Niles "Cyrano" Hollowell-Dhar. Their independent spirit and DIY approach defined their early years, leading to their initial signing with the Indie-Pop label as they honed a sound that mixed electronic production with rap and pop sensibilities.

The Cataracs first gained significant national attention through their production work and collaborations, but it was their 2011 single "Top of the World" that became their commercial breakthrough. The track, featuring Dev, exemplified their knack for creating anthemic, party-ready music and climbed the charts, solidifying their reputation as hitmakers. This success opened doors to high-profile work, including co-writing and producing the global smash "Like a G6" for Far East Movement featuring Dev and The Cataracs, which topped the Billboard Hot 100 and became a defining song of the electro-pop era.

Beyond their own releases, The Cataracs built an impressive production portfolio, working with artists like Snoop Dogg and Mike Posner, and contributing to the soundtrack for the film The Hangover Part II. Their work consistently showcased an ability to merge urban rhythms with pop melodies, making them sought-after collaborators in the early 2010s. In a significant shift, David Singer-Vine departed the duo in August 2012 to pursue other interests, leaving Niles Hollowell-Dhar to continue operating under The Cataracs name alone.

Hollowell-Dhar steered the project forward, but by 2014 he began releasing new material under a different moniker: KSHMR. This new identity focused more heavily on big-room and festival-oriented electronic dance music, leading to major success in the EDM world with solo releases and high-profile collaborations. While The Cataracs as an active duo concluded, their legacy endures through their influential productions and hits, and through Hollowell-Dhar's continued achievements as KSHMR, marking an evolution from their Berkeley high school origins to international stages.
