Sleigh Bells emerged from the Brooklyn music scene in 2008 as a confrontational and exhilarating noise pop duo, known for juxtaposing blistering guitar distortion with infectious pop melodies and cheerleader-style chants. The group was formed by guitarist and producer Derek Edward Miller, formerly of the hardcore band Poison the Well, and vocalist Alexis Krauss, a former teen pop singer. Their initial demos, characterized by a raw and maximalist sound, quickly generated buzz online and led to their signing with the independent label M.I.A.'s N.E.E.T. Recordings after the singer M.I.A. became an early champion of their work.

The duo's explosive debut album, "Treats," arrived in 2010 to widespread critical acclaim. The record was a landmark release, defining a specific moment in indie music with its audacious fusion of aggressive noise, hip-hop-inspired beats, and sugary-sweet vocals on tracks like "Rill Rill" and "Infinity Guitars." "Treats" established Sleigh Bells' signature aesthetic of contrasting light and dark, both sonically and thematically, and positioned them as one of the most distinctive and talked-about new acts of the era. They supported the album with intense and physically overwhelming live performances that solidified their reputation.

Sleigh Bells continued to refine and expand their sonic palette on subsequent albums. Their sophomore effort, "Reign of Terror" (2012), incorporated more melodic guitar lines and themes of violence and nostalgia, while "Bitter Rivals" (2013) leaned further into pop structures and brighter production. With "Jessica Rabbit" (2016), the duo explored more complex emotional and sonic territories, introducing greater dynamic range and experimental textures. Their later work, including the album "Texis" (2021, released on their own label, Torn Clean), demonstrated a continued evolution, channeling their chaotic energy into a more streamlined and dance-oriented form of aggressive pop.

Throughout their career, Sleigh Bells maintained a fiercely independent path, self-producing their records and eventually forming their own label. Their influence is heard in the wave of artists who blend abrasive and pop elements, and they remain a unique fixture in the alternative music landscape. The duo continues to write, record, and perform, consistently delivering their characteristically high-energy and visceral take on pop music.
