Rob Reiner was a towering figure in American entertainment, whose impact as both an actor and a director left an indelible mark on film and television. Born on March 6, 1947, in New York City to actors Estelle Reiner and Carl Reiner, he grew up immersed in the world of comedy and performance. Reiner first captured the public’s attention with his iconic portrayal of Michael "Meathead" Stivic on the groundbreaking sitcom All in the Family, a role he played from 1971 to 1979. His performance as the liberal, often exasperated son-in-law of Archie Bunker earned him two Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Supporting Actor and cemented his status as a beloved television star.

Transitioning behind the camera, Reiner launched a directorial career that produced a remarkable string of critically acclaimed and commercially successful films. He made his directorial debut with the heavy metal mockumentary This Is Spinal Tap in 1984, a cult classic that satirized the rock music industry with sharp wit and enduring humor. He followed this with a diverse range of hits, including the romantic road comedy The Sure Thing, the coming-of-age drama Stand by Me, the adventure romance The Princess Bride, and the beloved romantic comedy When Harry Met Sally.... Reiner also demonstrated his versatility with the psychological thriller Misery, the legal drama A Few Good Men, which was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture, and the political romance The American President. In 1987, he co-founded the production company Castle Rock Entertainment, which became a powerhouse behind many of his projects. His work was recognized with numerous accolades, including a Hugo Award, nominations for an Academy Award, a BAFTA Award, and nine Golden Globe Awards, and three of his films have been inducted into the National Film Registry.

Beyond his filmmaking, Reiner was a prolific actor who appeared in a wide array of movies, including Sleepless in Seattle, Bullets Over Broadway, The First Wives Club, Primary Colors, EDtv, and The Wolf of Wall Street. He was also a dedicated liberal political activist, championing causes such as LGBTQ rights, early childhood education, and environmental protection. He chaired the successful 1998 campaign for California’s First 5 childhood education initiative and, alongside his wife Michele Reiner, co-founded the American Foundation for Equal Rights in 2008, which spearheaded the legal challenge against California’s same-sex marriage ban. Reiner was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1999 and received the Chaplin Gala Tribute at the Film at Lincoln Center in 2014. On December 14, 2025, Reiner and his wife were tragically found stabbed to death in their Los Angeles home. Their son, Nick Reiner, has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder, and the case remains ongoing.
