Porcupine Tree emerged as one of the most critically revered and influential progressive rock bands of their generation, operating for decades with a dedicated cult following that often saw them described as "the most important band you'd never heard of." The brainchild of musician Steven Wilson, the project began in 1987 in Hertfordshire, England, initially as a solo studio endeavor blending psychedelic rock, space rock, and experimental sounds. Wilson created the early material himself, releasing the cassette-only album "Tarquin's Seaweed Farm" under the Porcupine Tree name before compiling these and other recordings for the official debut, "On the Sunday of Life," in 1992.

By late 1993, Wilson sought a collaborative band dynamic, solidifying the first permanent lineup with keyboardist Richard Barbieri (formerly of Japan), bassist Colin Edwin, and drummer Chris Maitland. This quartet, with Wilson as guitarist and lead vocalist, began to refine the band's expansive sound, drawing comparisons to Pink Floyd while developing a distinct identity across albums like "The Sky Moves Sideways" and "Signify." Their signing to the Snapper/Kscope label in the late 1990s marked a shift towards a more accessible alternative rock style, evident on the acclaimed records "Stupid Dream" and "Lightbulb Sun," which featured sharper songcraft without sacrificing their progressive inclinations.

The band's evolution continued into the new millennium with a significant lineup change and a heavier musical direction. In 2002, drummer Gavin Harrison replaced Maitland, bringing a formidable technical prowess that helped steer Porcupine Tree toward progressive metal on albums like "In Absentia," "Deadwing," and "Fear of a Blank Planet." This period saw them sign to a major label, Roadrunner Records, and achieve greater international recognition, with their complex compositions and dark thematic explorations earning accolades from both fans and fellow musicians. Their 2009 album, "The Incident," was another conceptual triumph, but following its supporting tour, the band entered a prolonged public hiatus as Wilson focused on his prolific solo career and other members pursued their own projects.

For over a decade, the status of Porcupine Tree remained uncertain, though Wilson, Barbieri, and Harrison secretly worked on new material intermittently. This clandestine activity culminated in the surprise announcement and subsequent release of their eleventh studio album, "Closure/Continuation," in June 2022. The record and its accompanying tour marked a triumphant return, reaffirming their place as innovative architects of modern progressive rock, even as Wilson confirmed the album's title reflected the band's fluid and non-committal future. Their legacy endures as a body of work that consistently defied mainstream trends while inspiring a generation of artists across the rock and metal spectrum.
