Passion
Passion emerged in 1997 as a collective movement and worship band dedicated to engaging university students with the message of Jesus Christ. Founded by Louie and Shelley Giglio, the group originated from the Passion conferences, large-scale gatherings for young adults that began in Atlanta, Georgia. While not a fixed band in the traditional sense, Passion became known as a rotating collective of influential Christian worship leaders and musicians who recorded and performed together under this banner, creating a dynamic and evolving sound that defined a generation of contemporary worship music.
The collective's early recordings, such as the 1998 live album "Live Worship from the 268 Generation," captured the energy of their conferences and helped spread their music. Over the years, Passion featured a who's who of modern worship artists, including Chris Tomlin, Matt Redman, Christy Nockels, David Crowder, Kristian Stanfill, and Hillsong UNITED, among others. Their collaborative albums, often recorded live at events, served as annual snapshots of the movement's heartbeat and musical direction. A major commercial and critical breakthrough arrived in 2010 with the album "Awakening," which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Christian Albums chart and spawned the Grammy-nominated and Dove Award-winning single "Our God," performed by Chris Tomlin.
Passion's influence extended beyond chart success, as they were instrumental in popularizing worship anthems that became staples in churches worldwide. Songs like "How Great Is Our God," "10,000 Reasons (Bless the Lord)," and "Holy Is the Lord" found their initial widespread exposure through Passion recordings and conferences. The collective amassed numerous Dove Awards and Grammy nominations over the decades, consistently reflecting the forefront of modern worship. Their annual conferences continued to draw tens of thousands of students, while their albums maintained a strong presence on Christian music charts, with later releases like "Worthy of Your Name" (2017) and "Follow You Anywhere" (2019) continuing their legacy.
Operating as both a musical entity and a global movement, Passion remained a pivotal force in Christian music, bridging the gap between intimate worship and large-scale communal experience. Their model of artist collaboration centered on a shared message influenced countless other worship initiatives. The Passion band, through its ever-renewing lineup of gifted worship leaders, sustained a mission focused on glorifying God and inspiring students, ensuring its recordings were not merely albums but documented moments of a continuing spiritual awakening.
