Mithun Chakraborty, born Gouranga Chakraborty on 16 June 1950, is a towering figure in Indian cinema, celebrated as an actor, producer, entrepreneur, and politician. Over a career spanning more than five decades, he has appeared in over 350 films across multiple languages, including Hindi, Bengali, Bhojpuri, Telugu, and Tamil. Revered by fans as "Mahaguru," or "The Great Teacher," Chakraborty has earned three National Film Awards and four Filmfare Awards, and has been honored with both the Padma Bhushan, India's third-highest civilian award, in January 2024, and the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award for the year 2022, announced in September 2024.

Chakraborty made his acting debut in the art house drama Mrigayaa (1976), directed by Mrinal Sen, a performance that won him his first National Film Award for Best Actor. His breakthrough in mainstream cinema came with the Bengali film Nadi Theke Sagare (1978), but it was the 1982 hit Disco Dancer that catapulted him to stardom, becoming a massive box office success in India and the Soviet Union. His portrayal of a disco dancer resonated with audiences worldwide, establishing him as a cultural icon. Beyond this, Chakraborty delivered acclaimed performances as both a lead and character actor, with his role in Agneepath earning him the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor in 1990.

Outside of acting, Chakraborty has built a formidable business empire through his Monarch Group, which operates in the hospitality and education sectors, and his production house Paparatzy Productions. He has also been deeply involved in welfare initiatives, co-founding the Cine & T.V Artistes Association (CINTAA) in 1992 alongside Dilip Kumar and Sunil Dutt to support actors in need, and serving as Chairperson of the Film Studios Setting & Allied Mazdoor Union, advocating for cinema workers' rights. His role as Grand Master on the television show Dance India Dance earned entries in both the Limca Book of Records and the Guinness World Records.

In the political arena, Chakraborty played a pivotal role in mediating between Pranab Mukherjee of the Indian National Congress and Mamata Banerjee during the 2012 Indian presidential election, securing Banerjee's All India Trinamool Congress support for Mukherjee. He later joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on 7 March 2021, ahead of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly election, and served as a Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament. Chakraborty's journey from a National Film Award-winning actor to a philanthropist and political figure underscores his enduring influence on Indian culture and society.
