Max Minghella
Max Giorgio Choa Minghella, born on 16 September 1985, is a British actor and director who has carved a distinctive path in both film and television. He is best known for his compelling performances in acclaimed projects such as The Social Network, The Handmaid's Tale, and Syriana, as well as for stepping behind the camera to direct his first feature film. Minghella has earned a reputation for choosing complex, often morally ambiguous roles that showcase his range and depth as a performer.
Born in London, Minghella is the son of the celebrated filmmaker Anthony Minghella and choreographer Carolyn Choa. Growing up in a creative household, he was exposed to the film industry from an early age, but he initially pursued an education in history at Columbia University before fully committing to acting. His early career saw him taking on supporting roles in high-profile projects, including a part in the political thriller Syriana opposite George Clooney and a role in the art-house drama Elvis and Anabelle. These early experiences helped him hone his craft and establish connections within the industry.
Minghella’s breakthrough came in 2010 when he was cast as Mark Zuckerberg’s business partner Divya Narendra in David Fincher’s The Social Network. The film was a critical and commercial success, and Minghella’s portrayal of the ambitious Harvard student earned him widespread recognition. He followed this with a role in George Clooney’s political drama The Ides of March, where he played a young campaign staffer, further demonstrating his ability to navigate complex narratives. During this period, he also took on a lead role in the independent film The Internship and appeared in the horror sequel Spiral from the Saw franchise.
Minghella achieved his most prominent and enduring role in 2017 when he was cast as Nick Blaine in the dystopian drama series The Handmaid's Tale, based on Margaret Atwood’s novel. His portrayal of the stoic and conflicted driver earned him critical acclaim and a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. The role made him a household name and allowed him to explore the character’s moral complexities over the show’s five-season run, which concluded in 2025. His performance as Nick became a fan favorite, providing a nuanced counterpoint to the show’s harrowing themes.
In addition to his acting work, Minghella has pursued a career as a director. He made his directorial debut with the coming-of-age comedy Teen Spirit, released in 2018, starring Elle Fanning as a young singer pursuing her dreams. The film received mixed but generally positive reviews, with critics praising its visual style and Minghella’s handling of the material. He has since expressed interest in directing more projects, signaling a desire to expand his creative footprint beyond acting. In 2022, he appeared in Damien Chazelle’s lavish Hollywood epic Babylon, adding another high-profile collaboration to his resume. Minghella continues to be a respected figure in the entertainment industry, balancing his work in front of and behind the camera with a thoughtful, deliberate approach to his career.
