John Ratzenberger
John Ratzenberger is an American actor whose indelible mark on popular culture spans both live-action television and the world of animated cinema, most famously for his Emmy-nominated portrayal of the know-it-all mailman Cliff Clavin on the beloved sitcom Cheers and as the voice of numerous iconic characters in Pixar’s animated feature films. Born on April 6, 1947, in Bridgeport, Connecticut, Ratzenberger developed an early interest in performance and storytelling. He began his entertainment career in the 1970s while living in London, where he immersed himself in the British film and television scene, acting in and writing projects that honed his craft before he returned to the United States. This transatlantic experience gave him a unique comedic sensibility and a versatile range that would later serve him well.
Ratzenberger’s big break came in a most serendipitous fashion. While auditioning for a role in a new sitcom set in a Boston bar, he was told the part of a regular patron had already been cast, but he was asked if he had any other character ideas. On the spot, he created the character of Cliff Clavin, a loquacious and endlessly knowledgeable postal worker who became one of the most memorable figures on Cheers. The series, which ran from 1982 to 1993, was a massive success, and Ratzenberger’s performance earned him two Primetime Emmy Award nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. He reprised the role in the short-lived spin-off The Tortellis, an episode of Wings, and later in an episode of Frasier, solidifying Cliff Clavin as a beloved television icon.
Following the conclusion of Cheers, Ratzenberger began a remarkable second career as a voice actor for Pixar Animation Studios. His first role was as the wisecracking piggy bank Hamm in the studio’s debut feature film, Toy Story (1995), a character he would voice across all four installments of the franchise. This began an extraordinary collaboration with Pixar that saw Ratzenberger voicing a character in nearly every subsequent Pixar film, a streak that included the Yeti in Monsters, Inc. and its prequel, the villainous Underminer in The Incredibles and its sequel, and the loyal truck Mack in the Cars franchise. He also voiced Fritz in Inside Out and its sequel. Including both his voice work and live-action cameos, Ratzenberger is recognized as one of the highest-grossing actors in box office history, a testament to his consistent presence in some of the most successful films ever made. His career stands as a unique bridge between classic television comedy and modern animated blockbusters, making him a true fixture in the entertainment landscape.
