Holly Holm emerged as one of the most accomplished and surprising crossover athletes in combat sports history, achieving elite status in both professional boxing and mixed martial arts. Born on October 17, 1981, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, she was raised in a sporting family by her father, Roger Holm, a church pastor and former amateur boxer, and her mother, Tammy. Her athletic journey began in gymnastics, dance, and swimming before she discovered kickboxing and later transitioned to boxing under the guidance of trainer Mike Winkeljohn.
Holm's boxing career was nothing short of legendary. Compiling a remarkable record, she became a multiple-time world champion across three weight classes, earning The Ring magazine's Fighter of the Year award twice. She successfully defended her world titles 18 times and is widely regarded by experts, including BoxRec, as one of the greatest female professional boxers of all time. Seeking a new challenge, she transitioned to mixed martial arts in 2011, bringing her formidable striking skills into the cage.
Her mixed martial arts career reached an iconic pinnacle on November 15, 2015, at UFC 193 in Melbourne. Facing the seemingly invincible UFC women's bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey, Holm was a significant underdog. In a stunning performance, she utilized precise footwork and powerful striking to defeat Rousey by knockout in the second round, capturing the UFC Women's Bantamweight Championship. The victory, considered one of the greatest upsets in combat sports history, made Holm the first fighter to win a major world title in both professional boxing and MMA.
While her championship reign was followed by a series of competitive fights against other top contenders in the UFC's bantamweight and featherweight divisions, Holm's legacy was forever cemented by that historic night. She remained a perennial contender, challenging for UFC gold on several more occasions and maintaining her status as one of the sport's most respected veterans. Her career stands as a unique testament to versatility and power, bridging two worlds of combat and inspiring a generation of fighters.
