Eve Hewson emerged as a compelling screen presence in her own right, building a respected acting career distinct from the towering legacy of her father, Bono, the iconic frontman of U2. Born Memphis Eve Sunny Day Iris Hewson in Dublin, Ireland, she is the daughter of the musician and activist Ali Hewson. While her famous lineage inevitably drew initial attention, Hewson steadily forged her own path through a series of nuanced performances across film and television, earning critical acclaim and leading roles in major international productions.
She made her feature film debut in the 2008 drama The 27 Club, but her first significant role came in 2011 with This Must Be the Place, where she acted opposite Sean Penn. This early work demonstrated her willingness to take on complex characters, a trait that would define her career. She continued to build her filmography with roles in Blood Ties (2013) and played the daughter of Tom Hanks's character in Steven Spielberg's Cold War thriller Bridge of Spies (2015). Her breakout television role arrived in 2014 when she was cast as Nurse Lucy Elkins in the critically acclaimed Cinemax period medical drama The Knick, starring alongside Clive Owen. Her performance over two seasons showcased her ability to hold her own in a gritty, ensemble period piece.
Hewson continued to balance film and television, appearing in the 2018 adaptation of Robin Hood and taking on the lead role of Anna Wetherell in the 2020 BBC/Starz fantasy miniseries The Luminaries. However, it was her starring role as the enigmatic single mother Adele in the 2021 Netflix psychological thriller miniseries Behind Her Eyes that brought her widespread global recognition. Her chilling and layered performance was pivotal to the show's viral success. She quickly followed this with a celebrated turn as one of the fiercely loyal Garvey sisters in the Apple TV+ black comedy series Bad Sisters, which earned her a nomination for a Critics' Choice Television Award.
In 2023, Hewson delivered a standout performance as the titular struggling mother and aspiring musician in the John Carney musical film Flora and Son, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival to strong reviews. She continues to seek out diverse projects, recently starring in the Netflix mystery drama The Perfect Couple (2024). Through her careful selection of roles and dedicated performances, Eve Hewson has successfully established herself as a versatile and talented actress, ensuring her work remains the primary focus of her public narrative.
