BLACKPINK Biography

news-detailsConsisting of members Jisoo, Jennie, Rose and Lisa, BLACKPINK is a South Korean girl group that was formed by YG Entertainment. Making their debut on August 8, 2016, the four-piece group became the fastest artist to dominate Billboard's World Digital Songs chart with two of their debut singles "Whistle" and "Boombayah". In addition to that, they broke the record for the shortest time for a girl group to win on a music program after taking first place on "Inkigayo" just 13 days after their debut.

Less than six months after the release of their debut single album "Square One", BLACKPINK unveiled its follow-up, "Square Two", on November 1 of the same year. Its lead single, "Playing with Fire", became the group's second single to hit No. 1 on World Digital Songs chart. Their success earned them several rookie awards at major Korean year-end music award shows, including Melon Music Awards, Golden Disc Awards and Seoul Music Awards.

In the following year, the group unveiled the official name of their fanclub, Blink, as well as released a digital single titled "As If It's Your Last". While the song debuted atop World Digital Songs chart with only one day of tracking, its music video broke the record for the most liked music video by a Korean girl group on YouTube. It garnered 2 million likes.

BLACKPINK went on making their Japanese debut with a self-titled EP in August 2017 before re-releasing it under the name "Re:Blackpink" in January 2018. Their first Korean EP, "Square Up", was released on June 15 with lead single "Ddu-Du Ddu-Du" debuting at No. 55 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart. It became the highest-charting song by an all-female K-Pop act on the chart. Meanwhile, the music video became the most viewed online video in the first 24 hours by a Korean act on YouTube with 36.2 million views. The record was later broken by BTS' (Bangtan Boys) "IDOL" visuals.

The four-piece group kicked off their first world tour, "In Your Area", with a two-night show in Seoul on November 11 and 11, 2018. The North American, Europe and Australia dates for the tour were announced in January 2019, after the group released their first Japanese album "Blackpink in Your Area" two months ago.

BLACKPINK made their American debut in February 2019 at Universal Music Group's 2019 Grammy Artist Showcase, which was an invite-only event, before appearing on several TV shows such as "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert" and "Good Morning America". Later in April, the group released their second EP "Kill This Love" as the music video for the title track became the most viewed online video in first 24 hours on YouTube with 56.7 million views. The record was later broken by BTS' "Boy with Luv" music video.

In that same month, BLACKPINK became the first female K-Pop group to perform at Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.
