Black Country Communion Biography

news-detailsBlack Country Communion emerged as a powerful rock supergroup, uniting the formidable talents of bassist and vocalist Glenn Hughes, guitarist Joe Bonamassa, drummer Jason Bonham, and keyboardist Derek Sherinian. Formed in 2009 and based in Los Angeles, the band carved a distinct niche by channeling the heavy, blues-drenched spirit of 1970s classic rock, a sound deeply rooted in the members' legendary pedigrees. The project began after an impromptu backstage jam between Hughes and Bonamassa in November 2009, which caught the ear of producer Kevin Shirley. Shirley encouraged them to formalize the collaboration, suggesting they recruit Bonham and Sherinian to complete the lineup. The band's name paid homage to the industrial West Midlands region of England, known as the Black Country, where both Hughes and Bonham spent their formative years.

The quartet quickly harnessed their collective chemistry, entering the studio to record their self-titled debut album, "Black Country," which was released in September 2010. The album was met with critical acclaim, praised for its raw energy and masterful musicianship that evoked the heyday of bands like Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin. They maintained a prolific pace, delivering "Black Country Communion 2" in 2011, which they supported with their first concert tours across the United States and Europe, solidifying their reputation as a potent live act. Their third album, "Afterglow," arrived in 2012, continuing their streak of hard-hitting, organ-and-guitar-driven rock.

However, creative tensions, particularly between Hughes and Bonamassa, led to the guitarist's departure and the band's dissolution in early 2013. Hughes and Bonham soon moved on to form another group, California Breed. A reconciliation between Hughes and Bonamassa in 2016 sparked an unexpected and welcome reunion of the original lineup. They returned triumphantly with "BCCIV" in 2017, an album that picked up right where they left off, showcasing a revitalized and even more cohesive unit. After another extended hiatus, Black Country Communion reconvened and released their fifth studio album, simply titled "V," in 2024, proving the enduring power and appeal of their collaborative vision in the rock landscape.
