Formed in 2007 at Leeds University, alt-J emerged as one of the most distinctive and critically acclaimed British indie rock bands of their generation. The quartet, originally consisting of Joe Newman, Thom Sonny Green, Gus Unger-Hamilton, and Gwil Sainsbury, crafted a unique sonic identity characterized by intricate harmonies, polyrhythmic percussion, and literary lyricism, all anchored by Newman's idiosyncratic vocal delivery. Their name, derived from the keyboard shortcut for the Greek letter delta (?), signaled a band interested in mathematical precision and artistic symbolism, a theme that would permeate their work.

The band's meticulous efforts culminated in their debut album, An Awesome Wave, released in 2012. A dense and adventurous collection of songs, the album was a slow-burn success, gradually gaining momentum through word-of-mouth and the haunting single "Breezeblocks." Following extensive touring, founding member Gwil Sainsbury amicably departed the band in early 2014. As a trio, alt-J returned later that year with their ambitious second album, This Is All Yours. The record debuted at number one on the UK Albums Chart, featuring the anthemic "Left Hand Free" and the sample-driven "Hunger of the Pine," which incorporated a vocal snippet from Miley Cyrus. This period solidified their status as major festival headliners and international touring artists. Their third studio effort, 2017's Relaxer, saw the band exploring darker, more expansive soundscapes, drawing inspiration from sources as varied as the film The Last of the Mohicans and the story of Leonard Matlovich.

After a five-year gap, their longest between albums, alt-J returned in 2022 with their fourth studio album, The Dream. Marking a shift towards more narrative-driven songwriting, the album tackled themes of greed, tragedy, and modern anxiety, inspired by stories ranging from a marathon cheater to the 2008 financial crisis. It was met with widespread critical acclaim and earned the band another Mercury Prize nomination, proving their enduring relevance and creative evolution.
