Emerging from the Chicago suburbs in 1996, Alkaline Trio carved a distinct and enduring niche in American punk rock with their signature blend of macabre lyrical themes, infectious melodies, and a devoted, cult-like following. Founded by vocalist/guitarist Matt Skiba, bassist Rob Doran, and drummer Glenn Porter, the band’s early sound was captured on their 1997 debut single "Sundials". Following Doran's departure, Dan Andriano joined, not only taking over bass duties but also becoming a crucial co-lead vocalist, establishing the band's defining vocal trade-off dynamic. This classic lineup, with Skiba and Andriano sharing songwriting and frontman duties, quickly solidified their reputation with the raw, influential album Goddamnit in 1998 and its follow-up, Maybe I'll Catch Fire in 2000.
The band's trajectory shifted with the departure of Porter and the arrival of drummer Mike Felumlee for their 2001 album From Here to Infirmary. Backed by the standout singles "Stupid Kid" and "Private Eye," the album significantly broadened their audience and set the stage for their commercial breakthrough. The 2003 album Good Mourning became a landmark release, debuting at number 33 on the Billboard 200 and introducing longtime drummer Derek Grant to the recording process. This period cemented Alkaline Trio as a major force in the early 2000s punk scene. They continued to evolve with 2005's more layered Crimson and 2008's Agony & Irony, their sole release on a major label with Epic Records.
In a move that reaffirmed their independent spirit, Alkaline Trio returned to their formative punk sound and early producer Matt Allison for 2010's This Addiction, released on their own Heart & Skull label via Epitaph. The album debuted at number 11 on the Billboard 200, marking the highest chart position of their career. The band celebrated their 15-year anniversary in 2011 with the acoustic-focused retrospective Damnesia. While continuing to release albums like My Shame Is True (2013) and Is This Thing Cursed? (2018), Skiba's high-profile tenure from 2015 to 2022 as a guitarist and vocalist for the legendary band Blink-182 brought Alkaline Trio to an even wider mainstream rock audience.
The band entered a new chapter in 2023 when Derek Grant departed after twenty-two years. Atom Willard briefly assumed drumming duties, appearing on three 2025 singles produced by Travis Barker, before departing in early 2026. The band's tenth studio album, Blood, Hair, and Eyeballs, was released in January 2024 as their final recording with Grant. In March 2026, Matt Skiba announced that Tosh Peterson would become the band's new permanent drummer, ushering in the latest era for the enduring punk trio as they continue to tour and record.
