Akiko Yajima, born on May 4, 1967, in Kashiwazaki, Niigata, is a celebrated Japanese voice actress whose decades-long career has left an indelible mark on anime, video games, and dubbing. She is best known for her iconic portrayal of the mischievous title character Shinnosuke Nohara in the long-running anime series Crayon Shin-chan, a role she voiced for over 25 years before retiring from it in 2018. Her distinctive vocal work brought the character to life for millions of fans across Japan and around the world, cementing her status as one of the most recognizable voices in the industry.

Yajima began her voice acting career in the early 1990s, quickly establishing herself with a versatile range that allowed her to tackle both energetic children and more serious, dramatic roles. One of her earliest major roles was as Sally Yoshinaga in the mecha anime The Brave Express Might Gaine, followed by Paffy Pafuricia in Ha? Taikei Ry? Knight. She gained further prominence with her performance as Relena Peacecraft in the beloved series Mobile Suit Gundam Wing, a role that showcased her ability to convey both vulnerability and strength. In the magical girl genre, she voiced Mipple in the original Futari wa Pretty Cure, a foundational entry in the long-running franchise. She also took on memorable roles such as Ayumi Himekawa in Glass Mask, Riku and Diva in Blood+, Longlong in Shizuku-chan, and Kohaku in Inuyasha. Her work in video games includes voicing Annie Barrs in the Tales of series and providing the iconic voice of Spyro the Dragon in the Spyro the Dragon video game series, a role she held until 2000.

Beyond her original anime and game work, Yajima was also a prominent voice dubber for live-action films and video games. She notably provided the Japanese voice for Anakin Skywalker in several Star Wars installments and for Harry Potter in early Harry Potter films and video games, bringing these beloved characters to Japanese audiences. Her ability to capture the essence of such iconic figures further demonstrated her remarkable talent and adaptability.

On June 29, 2018, Yajima made the difficult decision to retire from voicing Shinnosuke Nohara in Crayon Shin-chan, citing the physical and vocal strain of maintaining the character's unique voice over so many years. The role was subsequently taken over by Yumiko Kobayashi. In a significant career move, she joined the agency Across Entertainment on August 1, 2024, under the stage name Aki Uechi. She reverted to using her real name on April 1, 2025, continuing her legacy as one of Japan's most respected and beloved voice actresses.
