"IT'S OKAY HELLO KITTY FANS, KITTY PURRY IS A CAT," Perry told her 56 million of followers. Seacrest, meanwhile, quipped, "Has anyone alerted [] to this hello kitty news?" Lavigne has a song called "Hello Kitty" which is featured in her self-titled album released last year.

As reported by L.A. Times, Sanrio told anthropologist Christine R. Yano who was preparing an exhibit on the popular feline character, "Hello Kitty is not a cat. She's a cartoon character. She is a little girl. She is a friend. But she is not a cat. She's never depicted on all fours. She walks and sits like a two-legged creature. She does have a pet cat of her own, however, and it's called Charmmy Kitty."

Hello Kitty official fansite also provides some more background info. "Hello Kitty is a cheerful and happy little girl with a heart of gold. She lives in London with her mama (Mary White), papa (George White), and her twin sister Mimmy," it reads. "Traveling, listening to music, reading, eating cookies and mama's apple pies" are listed as her hobbies.

In response to the baffling news, the Peanuts company sent out a hilarious tweet. "We can confirm, Snoopy IS a dog," it read.
