Asiana Airlines May Sue KTVU-TV for Broadcasting Fake Pilot Names

Asiana Airlines may sue KTVU-TV and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) over the broadcast of fake names for the Flight 214 pilots. The South Korean airlines doesn't reveal what legal measures it's considering to take against both KTVU-TV and the NTSB, but said on Sunday, July 14 that the report "badly damaged" the reputation of the airline and its pilots.

On Friday, a KTVU-TV anchor read fake and racially offensive names of pilots on the airline's crashed plane, which departed from Incheon International Airport, South Korea for San Fransisco. The Fox-affiliated television station on the San Francisco Bay Area then apologized for the blunder, saying that it had checked the names with the NTSB.

The agency initially denied the claim, but then revealed that a summer intern confirmed the names to the TV station "outside of the scope of his authority." It also posted an apology on its website, saying it "apologises for inaccurate and offensive names that were mistakenly confirmed as those of the pilots."

Asiana Airlines Flight 214 crashed during an attempted go-around at its destination, San Francisco International Airport, on July 6. Two passengers died at the crash scene and a third passenger died while in intensive care.
