AceShowbiz - Dan Rather, the legendary newsman who anchored "CBS Evening News" for over two decades, is returning to CBS News after an 18-year absence. Rather, now 92, will be interviewed by correspondent Lee Cowan on "CBS News Sunday Morning" on April 25.
Rather's return to CBS comes in conjunction with the release of a new documentary about his life, titled "Rather". The film chronicles his rise to prominence at CBS, his sudden and controversial exit, and his subsequent resurgence as a voice of reason.
Rather has long maintained that he was scapegoated by CBS after a 2004 "60 Minutes II" report about George W. Bush's National Guard record. The report, which relied on documents that CBS later failed to authenticate, led to Rather's ouster in 2005 and the firing of his producer and three other colleagues.
The incident, dubbed "Rathergate," was dramatized in the 2015 film "Truth", starring Robert Redford as Rather and Cate Blanchett as his producer. Rather later expressed support for the film's depiction of the events, despite CBS's refusal to accept advertising for it.
Since leaving CBS, Rather has remained active on social media and has been a vocal critic of former President Donald Trump. In a 2023 interview, Rather stated that he holds no grudge against CBS for his controversial departure. He remarked that his time at the network was a "hell of a run" despite the challenging circumstances surrounding his exit.
Rather's appearance on "CBS News Sunday Morning" marks a significant moment in his career and a return to the network that once defined it. The episode is set to air on April 25 at 9 a.m. ET on CBS.
