'DWTS' Depicts Iconic Routines in Week 3, Books Paula Abdul as Guest Judge
The remaining contestants of "Dancing with the Stars: All-Stars" were dancing their way out to avoid double eliminations this week. In the Monday, October 8 performance show, the celebrities were tasked to reinvent iconic routines from past seasons.
Drew Lachey decided to recreate Joey McIntyre's cha-cha from season 1. Len Goodman liked the content and the concept he brought out there, while Carrie Ann Inaba said, "The creative direction was great." The 98 Degrees member, who was supported by his brother Nick Lachey from the audience seat that night, got 24 out of 30 points.
Gilles Marini redid Erin Andrews' tango from season 10 and wanted it to be memorable, so he set up a flying stunt. "That was strong, dominant, powerful - Fifty Shades of Gilles!" Bruno Tonioli exclaimed, but noted that there's "a couple of wobble though." Carrie Ann added, "You were out of sync and that's what caused all the wobbles." The actor earned 25 points.
Melissa Rycroft reimagined J.R. Martinez's samba from last season and got rave reviews from all three judges. "It's a terrific dance," Len commented, as Carrie Ann praised the contestant of "The Bachelor", "That was fantastic! I love all the samba drops." Melissa earned 27 points.
Apolo Anton Ohno redid Gilles' foxtrot from season 8 and tried to ooze sexiness "without taking my shirt off or showing my manboobs." He managed to achieve his goal as Bruno gushed, "It was sensual, it was classy, it was classic." Len liked that "it had fluidity of movement" and "there was great musicality." The speedskater got 25.5 points.
Kelly Monaco recreated Laila Ali's paso doble from season 4. Calling it artistic and powerful, Bruno admitted, "I'm tingling with pleasure." Carrie Ann added, "Val and Kelly, you are the couple to watch." The actress' dramatic routine earned 27 points, putting her on the top of this week's scoreboard along with Melissa.
Kirstie Alley decided to redo Carson Kressley's cha-cha from season 13. At the end of the routine, Maksim Chmerkovskiy kissed her until she fainted. Carrie Ann called it "the most fun I've had all night," while Len said she had "nice timing, good foot placement, the whole package." The judges gave her 24 points.
Sabrina Bryan recreated Melanie Brown's paso doble from season 5. Len commented, "It was full of risks - but, in addition to that, it was full of technique." Carrie Ann agreed that the singer showed a lot of technique, but thought that she didn't bring anything new. Sabrina got 25.5 points.
Emmitt Smith picked Mario Lopez's paso doble from season 3 and showed his competitive spirit in the fiery routine. "What you have, Emmitt, is presence. You come out and dominate the floor," Len said. Carrie Ann exclaimed, "Emmitt is back in the house," while Bruno advised the former NFL player to watch his shoulders, "because sometimes your shoulders go up." Emmitt got 25 points.
Helio Castroneves reimagined Apolo's quickstep in season 4 and was dubbed the "quickstep king" by Carrie Ann. Bruno said it's "absolutely brilliant," but noted that he "lost it" after he stepped on partner Chelsie Hightower's dress and stumbled. The race car driver earned 25.5 points.
Bristol Palin had a blow-up with partner Mark Ballas during rehearsals, but the pro-dancer claimed they "have gone past it." The pair did a paso doble which was a reinterpretation of Joanna Krupa's dance in 2009. Bruno liked the concept and dubbed it her "best dance up to date." Len agreed as saying, "The most content of any dance you've done." Despite the praises, the daughter of Sarah Palin only earned 22.5, the lowest of all contestants' scores that night.
Shawn Johnson decided to redo a quickstep by Helio in season 5 and took a risk by adding tricks and jumps. "One of the best dances, if not THE best dance I've seen in 15 seasons," Bruno exclaimed. Carrie Ann agreed that it's "by far the best dance we've ever seen on Dancing with the Stars." The retired gymnast earned 26.5 points.
In addition to featuring the contestants taking the dance floor, the latest performance show dropped a few bombshells. It was announced that Paula Abdul would appear as a guest judge on October 15, and that the contestants would pick dance styles for each other for next week.
