Karl walks Ricky and Stephen through a typical day in his life. After being woken by his girlfriend Suzanne going off to work, he mulls about, taking his breakfast while sitting on the bed as he listens to the radio. The last thing he does is put on his socks, which he doesn't like because "they take away your freedom." He talks to his parents every day, but doesn't really listen to them. Karl doesn't much care for television, and Stephen imagines he would've done well during World War II. He spends most of the day tidying up until Suzanne comes home. They chat over dinner, watch some television and go to sleep. "Another day closer to death," Stephen says.
