In Rouen, Christopher prepares recruits for battle, and comes to regret refusing a leave. Seeking permission to live at Groby with their son, Sylvia decides to visit her husband in France, infuriating his godfather and commanding officer, General Campion. Christopher's leniency towards a soldier accused of desertion angers the chief of military police; he also offends another officer by contradicting his advice on equine care. Following a confrontation outside Sylvia's hotel room, Campion is forced to send Christopher to the front lines - sentencing him to certain death.
