Maddie has exciting news. She's going to be named partner at her law firm. At least, that's the scuttlebuzz around the office. We know, we know. Scuttlebuzz isn't a word, but Maddie thinks it is. This is her big moment, so it's probably best to just let it go.
Speaking of letting things go, that's exactly what happens to Maddie. Her firm is hemorrhaging money. They're not making her partner. They're laying her off. Looks like the scuttlebuzz was a little off the mark. Maddie refuses to accept her firing, but that approach doesn't fly. She is absolutely out of a job and she absolutely does not want her parents to find out.
Maddie's plan is to find a new job fast. She'll then tell Joel and Vicky that she left her old firm on her own. She embarks on the great job search with zest and enthusiasm. That lasts about three days. By the ninth day, a disheartened Maddie resorts to downing bottles of wine and bags of cheese balls while watching daytime TV.
RING! Maddie gets a call for an interview. She wipes away the cheese ball dust and heads off to snag that job. Maddie is qualified and enthusiastic, though she also doesn't know when to stop talking. Nevertheless, she gets the gig. Whoo-hoo! Her folks instantly recognize the name of her new firm. It's those ambulance-chasing lawyers who advertise on bus benches. Their latest ad features Maddie's face front and center.
Mia and Casey can't wait for Vicky and Joel to give them their new baby present. They've been hoping for a brand new camera. What they get is an old children's book that Mia used to love as a kid. It's called The Little Brown Puppy. It's in mint condition, which means it'll fetch a decent dollar amount in an Internet auction. It's currently valued at $300, so let the bidding begin!
Casey and Mia thumb through The Little Brown Puppy. It doesn't take long for them to realize the book is extremely racist. They wonder what kind of monster is coming to their place to claim this prize from their online auction. Turns out it's just a little girl and her mom who had no idea the book was so prejudiced. The sale is off. This little puppy isn't going anywhere.
