On the planet Oa, headquarters of the Green Lantern Corps, Green Lanterns arrive at the Central Power Battery as Batman pays a visit to join Guy Gardner on a clean-up assignment. Batman has heard of Guy, and knows he tends to get into trouble. Guy taunts one small alien prisoner, pouring a cup of coffee on him. Batman points out too late that the alien race grows to giant-sized when exposed to liquid. The now giant-sized alien goes on a rampage and the Green Lanterns assemble to defeat it. It casually knocks them aside and Batman throws an exploding Batarang into it. The Caped Crusader swings across the room as Guy Gardner launches an attack of his own. Batman takes advantage of the distraction to jury-rig a device. The alien grabs Guy and slams him into a wall, and Batman offers his help. He swings on top of the alien and attaches the device, draining it of all its moisture and reducing it back to its normal size.

Back on Earth, prisoners escape from jail but Batman arrives to stop them. Green Arrow's Arrow-Plane arrives and Batman notes he can handle it by himself. Batman is surrounded and Green Arrow traps the heroes in a foam-prison arrow, and wonders if Batman is worried he'll show him up. The heroes dispatch the remaining prisoners and Green Arrow determines they're tied for knockouts. One remaining prisoner makes a break for it and the man casts a spell deflecting their weapons. He then casts a new spell transporting all three of them back to his home.

Batman and Green Arrow arrive in the past and the prisoner explains that he's Merlin. He teleported them there, desperate to stop Morgaine Le Fay and her army from invading Camelot. Morgaine overwhelmed the Knights of the Round Table and Merlin, and took control of Camelot. She transformed all of her prisoners into stone and darkness fell across the land. Merlin conjures a vision of Excalibur, hidden away, and says that only the one who is worthy can remove it from the stone. Merlin admits he's not sure which of them is worthy.

In Camelot, Morgaine monitors their activities and sends her pet, the demon Etrigan, to stop them.

Merlin, Green Arrow, and Batman travel through the forest and Merlin explains that he traveled to the future to find the one person other than King Arthur destined to retrieve Excalibur. Merlin concludes that Batman is the hero destined to gain the sword, but Green Arrow is skeptical. They're interrupted when Etrigan and a horde of monsters ambush them. Batman fights the demon with the aid of a mystical sword and shield given to him by Merlin. The wizard then temporarily disposes of Etrigan and Batman helps Green Arrow fight the other monsters. Merlin talks to Etrigan, saying he was once his servant and tries to take control of him. Etrigan teleports behind the wizard and knocks him out, while Green Arrow and Batman compete to see who can eliminate more monsters. Etrigan throws a boulder at them and Batman and Green Arrow double-team him, driving him off.

Etrigan teleports back to Camelot and Morgaine informs him that she'll deal with the heroes personally. The heroes continue their trek and Merlin grows tired of the future heroes' bickering. They arrive at the Tower of Excalibur and Merlin sends Batman on alone. Green Arrow doesn't accept that and rides for the tower. As they get to the water's edge, huge ogres emerge from the waters and attack. One of them grabs Green Arrows, who fires a gas arrow into its mouth and an exploding arrow into its forehead, knocking it out. Batman leaps onto the back of the other and tosses two bat grenades into its nostrils. Once the ogres are defeated, a set of stone columns form a path to the tower.

Morgaine and Etrigan teleport onto the beach and Merlin notes that no sorcery can prevent the destined hero from obtaining their detective. Merlin realizes that Morgaine has cast a spell, transforming Batman into an armored and mind-controlled servant. She sends Batman to get Excalibur. Merlin holds off Etrigan and conjures a sword for Green Arrow and sends him to stop Batman. Green Arrow heads for the tower and swings up to the entrance, intercepting Batman. The Dark Knight attacks Green Arrow and the two fight on the edge of the tower. Green Arrow is knocked off the edge and hangs by his fingertips as Batman moves in for the kill.

Etrigan knocks Merlin down and Morgaine sends him to finish off the wizard. Meanwhile, Green Arrow appeals to Batman who starts to recognize him, but Morgaine arrives and repeats her orders. Batman sends Green Arrow falling off the ledge to his apparent death. Below, Merlin tries to invoke the spell to transform Etrigan back to his human form. When Etrigan silences him, Merlin secretly casts a spell which strikes Batman, who is temporarily staggered.

Batman and Morgaine go into the tower and Batman reaches for the sword... and then knocks Morgaine down. Merlin and Etrigan, restored to his human form of Jason Blood, confront the sorceress. She transforms into a dragon and Batman tries to remove Excalibur from the stone. Merlin is astonished that Batman isn't the worthy one. Morgaine sends Batman flying and Jason Blood invokes the spelling transforming him back into Etrigan. The three heroes combine forces against Morgaine, but she retaliates by smashing the tower into rubble. Merlin casts a spell to protect them, exhausting his energies, and Morgaine tells them to surrender. She breathes fire, transforming first Etrigan and then Merlin into stone. She prepares to dispose of Batman but Green Arrow fires an exploding arrow into her head. He reaches for Excalibur but is unable to remove it, but Batman realizes that perhaps together they are worthy. They both grasp the sword and pull it free. Green Arrow uses his bow to fire the sword into Morgaine's chest. She disappears in a burst of light and smoke.

Merlin apologizes to Green Arrow for misjudging him, and Etrigan departs in a burst of brimstone. Merlin says that King Arthur will knight them both and the heroes are still arguing about which one deserves the credit. Merlin, irritated, teleports them back to the prison. Batman notes they're still tied and they figure there's nothing wrong with that... until they get an alert in Star City. Batman and Green Arrow race to see who can get there first.
